Land slide was trigged on 4th January 2010 near Attabad, Hunza. Massive land sliding occurred near village attabad, 109 Kilometer north east of Gilgit and about 19 Kilometers east of Hunza. The slide blocked Hunza River and created a dam with height varrying from 130 meters to 200 meters, thus blocking the only road link (Karokaram Highway) with China. Frontier Works Organization was tasked on 20 January 2010 to mobilize its resources and execute the plan / construction of approach track and 24 meters of spillway cut which was successfully completed in very short span of time. Frontier Works Organization put in all out efforts by making a spillway. A Cut through the slide was made so that water is released gradually from the lake reducing the risk by 50%. Experts from world bank Doctor Richard Hughes, Doctor David Petlay and Mrs Allessandro Polinieri visited the site to conduct technical evaluation and suggested modalities to tackle the catastrophe. They appreciated the speed of mobilization and quantum of work executed by Frontier Works Organization in such a short Span of time. The gigantic task was successfully completed on 18 May 2010. Frontier Works Organization worked round the clock under challenging environment to save thousands of precious lives and saved flooding of vast area. Frontier Works Organization is still working on the land slide to address the threat and make it possible for restoring the strategic link with China.
