Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), today’s most versatile and vibrant construction frm, was established on 31 October 1966 to wrought a miracle and carve out a modern highway, the Karakoram Highway, across crags and crevices of the highest mountain ranges of the world. It was towards the completion stage of KKH that the Government analysed the tremendous potential of FWO in carrying out civil engineering projects in diffcult and inhospitable areas and decided not only to keep FWO in existence, but also to expand its tentacles throughout the country.
For the last 50 years FWO has left its imprints, bringing prosperity to utterly backward and forgotten areas from the sun burnt plateaus of Baluchistan to lush green dales of Swat and Chitral and from the deserts of Sindh to snow capped Siachin. Over these years FWO has worked in diversified fields to include development of communication infrastructure like construction of roads, railway lines and airfields; irrigation like construction of dams, canals and barrages; power projects like thermal and hydal; tunnelling and mining; telecommunication; construction of residential and industrial infrastructure and proved its unmatched qualitative and quantitative capabilities.
In 1991, FWO was called upon to participate in the reconstruction phase of Kuwait, after the Gulf war,and given to clear 3000 square kilometers of highly mined area, littered with large quantity of ammunition left behind by the withdrawing Iraqi Army. FWO cleared the area in a record time of just 16 months, ahead of others construction frms of USA, UK, France, Egypt and Bangladesh. Similarly, in 2006, FWO constructed a road from Torkham to Jalalabad in the most hostile and diffculty security environment.
With professionally qualifed and competent staff, effcient work force, flexible organisation and a large pool of modernconstruction equipment and machinery FWO is capable of undertaking any construction assignment at short notice anywhere in Pakistan or abroad. FWO, motto ‘ Striving for Excellence’ amply speaks of the continued efforts to deliver the best.
Makran Coastal Highway Project was inaugurated on 16 Dec 2004. Makran Coastal Highway is a project of vital National interest undertaken by FWO. This project is a segment of greater Gwadar plan aimed to facilitate, bridge and develop various sectors of economy.
The construction of Makran Coastal Highway will not only generate enormous economic activiites in the region but will also pave way to create employment opportunities for the poor people living along the 800 KM long coastal belt. It will also provide a safe, convenient and affordable trade transit route to Afghanistan, China and Land-locked countries of Central Asia to thecountries of Middle East and Persian Gulf, thus bringing socio-economic uplift for all.
Makran Coastal Highway is not just another road, infact, it is a 650 KM longpromise of immense national development and progress. This highway is bound to open an absolutely new chapter of prosperity and is yet another proof of Frontier Works Organisation’s commitment to Nation Building.
Gomal Zam Dam is a project of vital national interest and will open a new chapter of prosperity for Pakistan. Respect for the local community and environment are among the top concerns on the Gomal Zam Dam Multipurpose Project (Dam Component), flood mitigation perennial water for irrigation, improved environment of the area, improvement of living standards and regional development are some of its most important purposes.
Frontier Works Organization takes full advantage of local expertise, labor, materials and services. Thinking locally makes good environmental as well as business sense, and will leave a positive legacy of economic growth and a stronger skill base in the region.
The project is the largest employer in the area, out of the more than three hundred people on the job, two - third are locals. The medical facilities held by Frontier Works Organization are being offered to the local populace.
The project is located at Khajuri Kuch (South Waziristan) approximately 135 Kilometers from Dera Ismial Khan. Gomal Zam Dam is multipurpose project having 133 meters high roller compacted concrete wall, creating a reservoir of 1.14 Million acre feet, spillway capacity of 1,53,000 cusecs, a small power house having installed capacity of 17.4 mega watts, flood protection and socio economic uplift of the area.
By late 2010, the work force employed by Frontier Works Organization is approximately 300 all ranks with more than 200 plant / equipment / vehicle pieces of all categories.
In 1958, it started as a modest project to provide an all weather road link between Swat and Gilgit which grew into a mega highway project when, in 1966, it was decided to link China with Pakistan through a highway.
kkh--new-2Initially the construction remained limited to a shingled road, with temporary bridges, between Thakot and Khunjerab (about 400 km) and the link was affected in February 1971. In the second phase the limits of the highway were extended up to Havelian, the temporary bridges were replaced with permanent ones and the road widened and carpeted to highway standards. The project was completed in 1978.
The work involved 21 million cubic meter of rock blasting and earthwork, using over 8000 tonnes of explosive and 80,000 tonnes of cement. On the average 15,000 men, 1200 vehicles and 1000 pieces of plant/machinery were employed on the project. During the construction 404 people lost their life and about the same number were seriously injured.
